Cloud Peak Energy in the red, six months into coal’s recovery year

The only coal company operating solely in the Powder River Basin ended the second quarter $6.9 million in the red.

Gillette-based Cloud Peak Energy operates the Antelope and Cordero Rojo mines in Campbell and Converse counties, as well as a Powder River Basin mine in southern Montana. It made it through the turbulence of the last two years, largely because it had avoided taking on significant debt in the years preceding the coal downturn.

Still, the company is not immune to the changes in the coal market, what many refer to as the “new normal” of Wyoming coal.
